Making your own tools is not only fun and rewarding, but also a great way to save money so that you end up with a tool that is better than you might otherwise be able to afford. I’ve got a bunch of cool tools that are made to do specific jobs on specific applications, but they don’t always have to be so custom. One tool I’ve seen made a few times, but that I do NOT have in my toolbox, is a slapper for working sheet metal and getting dents out. I do have some hammers and dollies, but nothing fancy. This is definitely a tool I want to make though because it is super simple and can be used to smooth, shrink, and contour metal. It’s a staple in metal working shops and is dead simple but really effective.
One other bonus to a slapper is that it is used almost exactly the same as a body hammer so you don’t need to learn a whole new skill to use it. The motions are all about the same, the results are just quicker because you have more surface to impact the metal with.
In this video from Make It Kustom, you are going to get a lesson in not only making this tool, but also using it properly, so it’s a great opportunity to be inspired and to learn!
