Sheet Metal Fab: How To Make And Install A Steel Roof Panel Insert In An Old Ford

The process in this video applies to just about any old 1920s and 1930s car that had a canvas or otherwise soft roof insert from the factory that you want to replace with smooth steel. Hot rodders have been doing this for a jillion years and a lot of them have done it wrong or at least not as right as they should have. If you really want to see how to do this the right way, so you end up with a really nice roof when done, this is the way to do it. Oh, and if you don’t own any cars of this era but are in need of replacing a section of roof on some other car or truck, this is going to be a valuable video to watch for you as well. This is a great lesson in large slightly curved panels. Watch.

Video Description from Carter Auto Restyling:

In this video I am welding a steel roof insert in a 1932 Chevy coupe. This video outlines the procedure of how I go about tackling a job like this. The process can be applied to any make of 1920s or 1930s coupes and sedans that originally had an open fabric roof. As with anything there are many different methods of filling the roof, this is just the way I do it, it works well for me, doesn’t require any specialty tools beyond what the average hobbyist already owns, and needs minimal bodywork when completed. Thanks for watching.
