The Right Fuel Tank Vent Size Is Everything! Here’s Why Doing It Wrong Will Suck

One thing you can’t fix with a hope and a prayer is a poorly designed fuel system. Getting the right size fuel pump, feed lines, return lines, and fuel tank are all key to making sure your car or truck can support whatever power level and performance you have in mind. But one key element lots of folks forget to design and size properly is the fuel tank vent system. Quite frankly, most race car guys haven’t got a clue because their cars run for such short periods of time, so an undersized vent won’t necessarily become a problem in your average 6 second or less dragstrip pass.

But if you drive your car, like we do on Rocky Mountain Race Week, then going hundreds of miles in 100 degree heat will quickly kill your pump and system no matter how much money you have in it, if your vent system isn’t correct. In fact, the biggest problems with fuel systems are the return side and vent side of the systems. The feed size isn’t nearly as critical in all reality. You can support thousands of horsepower with much smaller lines than you would imagine, but choke off the return, and don’t let the system vent, and it won’t support 100 horsepower for very long.

Here’s the latest video on the subject from Doug at Motion Raceworks. Check it out.
