TPI vs LT1 vs Carburetor: Which Choice Is Right For The 4.3L L99 Small Block Richard Has Been Testing?

Did Chevrolet screw it up? Well, maybe. You’ll just have to watch and find out. Maybe they didn’t, but maybe their older intakes are better on newer engines than they were on their original applications. Maybe a TPI is the perfect truck intake system. There are lots of induction systems that have been placed on engines from every make, and many are similar and lots are not. Luckily for us, Richard Holdener is always testing, and after doing some testing with the L99, aka the mini LT1, he thought that maybe the old TPI induction system would be the smart choice for it. But it won’t bolt on. Thankfully, the guys at TPIS were ready and willing to modify it so that it would so Richard could run it on the dyno and see what it makes.

Any guesses? Will it be better than the shorter runner LT1 style induction? Better than a carburetor and dual plane intake? The only way to find out is the run this sucker on the dyno and see what the curve says. The dyno doesn’t lie, and we have a feeling that if nothing else we’ll be learning things. And learning things is the reason engines get run on the dyno. Yes we want to see what the number is, but if you have an engine then running it on they dyno is about way more than that. It’s about testing, tuning and learning what your combo wants.

So what does the little L99 want? Old, new, or older yet? Watch and find out.

Here’s the description of the video straight from Richard.

WHY GM NEEDED TO USE TPI ON THE 4.3L L99 (AND TRUCKS). LT1 VS L98 TPI VS GM DUAL PLANE CARB INTAKE TEST-THE OTHER GUYS L99 4.3L V8. LONG VS SHORT RUNNERS VS DUAL PLANE. CARB VS EFI! CAN YOU INSTALL A TPI L98 INTAKE ON THE LATER (GEN 2) LT1 HEADS? HOW WILL THE LITTLE 4.3L L99 (BABY LT1) RESPOND TO THE LONG-RUNNER INTAKE? DID GM GET IT RIGHT USING SHORT RUNNERS ON THE LITTLE V8? IT’S ALL HERE!
