Will Thin Motor Oil Cause Engine Damage? Are They Only Good In Newer Engines?

Over the past two decades, manufacturers have specified thinner and thinner oils for their new engines, and with the increase in synthetic oils the viscosity has gotten even lower. But how does thin oil protect an engine compared to thicker oil? The standard in hot rods and race cars was 30 weight forever, with some folks using 10w30. Of course, alcohol cars and nitro burners use much thicker oils, but everyone knows that thin oil is worth some power too, so it’s hard to want to run something thicker when you are trying to make the most power.

But what about regular engines you have in your garage?

Let’s see what Project Farm throws at these thin oils to see just how well they perform.

Video Description:

Many modern cars require very thin (low viscosity) motor oil to operate more efficiently. Newer engines typically have tighter tolerances between engine parts. Let’s see if lower viscosity motor oil offers the same level of protection against engine wear. We’ll also see of the thinner oil experiences greater thermal breakdown and evaporation.
