The Top 11 Best Dragstrip Names

The Top 11 Best Dragstrip Names

Back when we did the Top 11 Race Car Driver Names it that tripped off a firestorm when people failed to read the intro and assumed we were calling those guys the Top 11 Race Car Drivers ever. We’re tempting fate again by doing another list of names.

Dragstrips typically have cooler names than circle tracks. Top-level facilities often have corporate sponsors and all kinds of junk that make them sound like a shopping mall, not a race track. The tracks listed below have no such problem. In fact, at several of these tracks the only “sanctioning body” is the huge dude at the end of the bleachers collecting the bets from spectators.

The Top 11 Best Dragstrip Names

11) Skyview Dragstrip, Tioga Center, New York:  This is a nice, fairly new strip that’s located on a gorgeous piece of real estate in upstate New York. IHRA Sanctioned.

10) Santa Pod, England, Wellingborough, England: It’s the Indy of England and one of the most well-known strips in the world, partly because of its weird name, but mostly because of it’s rich history. The name came from using the first part of the name of the old Santa Ana track back in California and the first section of the name of the Poddington Airfield, which is where the track is located. Hence, Santa Pod. FIA Sanctioned.

9) Action City Dragway, Terre Haute, Indiana: It’s a nice little 1/8-mile facility with a killer name. A promoter’s dream we’d say. We can hear it now, SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY at ACTION CITY DRAGWAY! NHRA Sanctioned.

8. ) Summerduck Dragway, Summerduck, Virginia: Sure it’s just named after the town it’s located in, but you’ve got to admit, you scratched you head when you first read it. It’s an IHRA sanctioned 1/8-mile.

7) No Problem Raceway Park, Belle Rose, Louisiana:  This is a great ¼-mile strip that’s host to one of the NHRA SportsNationals events, which are Sportsman-only national events. Praised for its racer friendly atmosphere and hard-biting strip, it’s only 12 feet above sea level and can provide some killer conditions when the air is right.

6) George Ray’s Wildcat Dragstrip, Paragould, Arkansas: It’s not just a track, it’s a living history museum and a look into what drag racing is when boiled down to its wonderfully simply essence and it happens every Sunday in George Ray’s backyard. The name is as awesomely retro as the rest of the place. Sanction? Not exactly.

5) Redline Raceway, Caddo Mills, Texas: Another great retro name from a little 1/8-mile strip in Texas. This track is an IHRA sanctioned facility and is neat in the fact that is seems to never close. They are racing continuously through the winter, every Sunday. We’re shoveling snow…suck. Does anyone know if this is the same location as the Drag Safari stop in 1955?

4) Quarter Aces Drag-o-Way, Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania
: Here’s a track that made a name switch. They would have never made the list when the facility was know as South Mountain Dragway. We are a little confused on why it’s called Quarter Aces and it’s an 1/8-mile strip. It sounds better we think. It appears to be NHRA sanctioned

3) Yellow Belly Dragway, Dallas, Texas: This place lives up to its name because many “yeller bellies” have probably run screaming and yelling from the place after experiencing a night of action there. It’s an outlaw track in every sense of the word. Everything we have read tells us that this place is wild west outlaw drag racing personified, both good and bad. Sanction? HA!

2) Headhunter Motor Club Putt Putt Bush Track, Eatonton, Georgia
: Sweet Jesus! Unsanctioned.

1) Junkyard #1 Dragway, Canton, Mississippi: We almost fell off of our chairs when we learned of this place. There’s not a ton to say other than things you’d expect, like, it’s an 1/8-mile, there’s no sanction, seemingly no rules, and no guarantee you’ll get out alive. A guy on another message board talked about racing through a puddle the size of a lake at the end of the track. This ain’t a list of great tracks, just great names and they don’t get any better than this one.

BTW, the infamous Yello Belly is spelled “Yello” not “Yellow” (outlaw spelling!)

I always liked “Pocono Drag Lodge” because it just makes no sense.

Other favorites from the past . . . New York National (sounds like an airport) . . . Lions . . . any drag strip with “U.S.” and a highway number in its name.

  2. Speedy

    And of course “Smokin’ Mo-Kan” . . . .

Which renews the suggestion for an “Outlaw” Drag Week tour of small, often dangerous and mostly unsanctioned “outlaw” tracks . . . Yello Belly, Wildcat, Junkyard #1 . . . .

. . . Desert Thunder in Midland, TX (a nice variation of the overused “thunder” theme)

Motor Mile Dragway, Radford, VA . . ..

    Speedworld, Phoenix, AZ . . . .

    Two-Lane Blacktop Dragstrip, Bee Branch, AR . . ..

    Accelaquarter Raceway Park, Harrisburg, IL . . . .

    Top Gun Raceway, Fallon, NV . . . .

Shady Side Dragway, Boiling Springs, NC . . . .

    National Trail, Columbus, OH

Lucky Drag City, somewhere in rural PA

  4. C1BAD66

    Bunker Hill Dragstrip, Peru, IN.

It’s named after a nearby Air Force base which was named after a [famous] Civil War battlefield near Boston, MA.

I always thought the track personnel should wear Civil War uniforms…

And there’s Immokalee Regional Raceway…kind of a fun name to say…

‘Sounds Hawaiian to me, but it’s in Florida.

Quarter Aces Dragway was founded in 1958 by the Quarter Aces Car Club, hence the name. In the early 70’s new ownership changed the name to South Mountain Dragway, then once again the new and current ownership switched back to Quarter Aces Dragway in 2008. It’s a cool little track with good hook and a knarly, banked, tight left-hander for a shutdown area. We make a few trips there each year. The track has a nice relationship with the nearby Carlisle Events Fairgrounds and together they hold races in conjuction with some the fbigger brand specific shows. We will be there June 1st for the All Ford National Race. The fairgrounds runs shuttle buses back and forth all day on Friday. You might even hear me doing some announcing…Check it out.

The best drag strip name for me will always be “Fremont Drag Strip”.
It’s dead and gone 20+ years now. All that remains is a vacant field.
It was my second home during my torrid youth way back in the ’70’s.
I still go back there every few years and try to listen for the echos of the top fuelers.

  7. gmc gasser

Amber Green Dragway, Eau Claire WI. which is now Rock Falls Raceway. Those words just say drag racing!

  8. nitroblast1

Being an “OLD SCHOOL” drag racing nut from Southern California, I have to say “LIONS”. The “Beach” had the best air/conditions. I raced there, O.C.I.R.,Irwindale, and San Gabriel, and LIONS was the best. I drive by where it was twice a day and can still catch a tear in the eye every once in a while. DRIVE THE HIGHWAY-RACE AT LIONS. OOPS theres another one of those tears!
