Video: The History and Awesome Personal Story Behind The Meyers Manx – An American Icon

Video: The History and Awesome Personal Story Behind The Meyers Manx – An American Icon

It is a little bit ironic that we’s find this killer Hot Rod Unlimited episode about the famed Meyers Manx on the day when we already ran some air cooled VW content, but it would be appropriate any day because of its total coolness. Hot Rod’s Elana Scherr sits down with the man himself, Bruce Meyers to learn about the creation about the iconic kit car,  its effect on the world of hot rodding and the gearhead hobby, and she also meets with enthusiasts to learn about their attachment to the little cars.  As most of you already know, the proper Meyers Manx was killed off by a flood of knockoff dune buggy kits by the early 1970s. Real ones from that era are prized by collectors. If we had to guess, the Meyers Manx probably ranks neck and next with the Lotus 7 as the most copied car ever built.

We’re glad that Elana chose to touch on the fact that many examples of the Manx were built as road going performance cars in the 1960s and early 1970s. Instead of attacking sand dunes with surf boards on top, they were carving up cones at slalom events, gymkhanas, and sporty car gatherings. Hot rodders recognize a good platform when they see it and they took to the Manx without hesitation. It is great to learn a little more about the guy behind the Manx in his own words as well. We’ve read lots about how the cars came to be but it goes a long way to see and hear the words from the man himself.

If you are into the history of this hobby we all know and love, this is MANDATORY VIEWING! Meyers embodied the spirit of both the California dude of the 1950s and 1960s as well as the smarts of an engineer in coming up with the Manx. It is a truly great story and video!

Well, that entry requirement eliminated most high school graduates these days! (Heck, it almost got ME.)

I’ve had an original Manx and the Corvair engine that came with it (not ON it) for several years. I keep telling myself “one of these days…” Maybe watching this video will get me off the dime. Thanks for the interview, nice to know that Mr Meyers is still around and in good spirits.
