Next on the docket of junk that is comprising our Awful Ads, Awful Cars fun today is the venerable Yugo. There are a bunch of people who will defend the little car that was sold for less and $4,000 brand new, but thousands more will tell those defenders to poop in a hat because the Yugo was complete junk.
Yugos went on sale in America in 1985 and ended their run in 1991. The initial buzz for the car caused a rush of orders which quickly tailed off. When more cars sold and the horror stories of ownership started to make their way to the surface, not even a late inning arrival in the form of a convertible could save them.
The fact that advertisers had the balls to equate this steaming pile with the likes of the VW Bug and Model T is commendable, if completely wrong.
