An early C3 Stingray Corvette and a De Tomaso Pantera, tearing up the roads near Asheville, North Carolina in the early 1970s…doesn’t sound too implausible, does it? If it weren’t for the mood music, we’d swear that this was nothing more than two well-to-do gentlemen having a ball on a cool day, but that isn’t the case. This Itali-Ford vs. Chevy matchup is from the 1974 movie “Challenge”, a movie whose only detail we could uncover with certainty is that the movie was designed to be close to the sleeper hit “Walking Tall” as it could be without plagiarizing the former.  After that…well, in this case, it’s probably best left to let the cars and the drivers do the talking. The Corvette comes off tail-happy and eager to spin, while the Pantera takes a couple of good lumps, including what appears to be a non-intentional ditching on a backroad. This is before CGI, before seriously staked-out routes. There’s even a chance that the traffic on I-40 didn’t know what was going on when two high-end sports cars came screaming past at triple-digit speeds!
