Bitchin’ Video: Gassers at the NHRA US Nationals in the Late 1960s

This video is a spectacular example of what the height of the gasser wars looked like on the strip in and in the pits.

The infamous gasser wars of the mid to late 1960s were fueled by provocative advertising in magazines and drag news papers of the day. Perhaps more importantly, they were heightened by the awesome racing and rivalries on the track. If the ads were nothing but fluff, the gasser craze would have died on the vine. When the racers ran each other like they were mortal enemies, fans took the bait and a quickly chose their favorite cars and drivers.

This video is a compilation of footage taken at Indy during the late 1960s. You’ll see all the big names of the day, some huge wheelies, packed stands, and most importantly a gaggle of kick ass hot rods. These cars really were something back then and as much as we like “modern” gasser builds, nothing beats the real McCoy. We believe that gassers are the ancestral fathers of Pro Mods and there are nearly three dozen of those guys showing up at Indy so this all ties up perfectly.

Among the cars you’ll see are Barb Hamilton’s blue Willys, a few of the S&S cars, Jim Oddy’s Austin, Ohio George’s Mustang, and a cast of thousands.

Gassers Forever!
