Chadmouth: 100MPH Couch? I’m not impressed. We could do better.

Chadmouth: 100MPH Couch? I’m not impressed. We could do better.

When we first heard about a speed record for a couch that was hit by a group of guys in Australia, we were intrigued. Once we saw the couch in question, we were not impressed. In fact so much so that we didn’t even run a blog item about it. After all, these guys didn’t take a real couch and go fast, they built a giant motorcycle powered go kart with a hand built couch and “coffee table” on it. On the surface this sounds cool, but when you really start to look at it there are things that piss us off. Hell it’s as much a couch as John Force’s funny car is a Mustang.

Earlier this week Brian wrote about the couch taking on a Ute in Australia to see which one could win in a drag race. The Ute handed the couch it’s cushion, and didn’t let them keep the change underneath. To see the video, click here.

So here’s the problem. The couch itself is small, it’s more of a love seat in American terms. Technically it can hold another person sitting next to the driver, but thanks to that giant “coffee table” in front of and on top of the couch as an aerodynamic device, even Nicole Richie couldn’t fit. Apparently, the rules are wide open with regards to building fast furniture. In Freiburger terms, I believe this one is not in the “spirit of the rules”. With that said, I would gladly use these lose rules to build a truly fast couch. One that is long and would allow you to hang out and drink beer on it with your buddies while watching the NHRA Winternationals on TV.

And what’s with the “coffee table”? I know that the coffee company that sponsored this effort wants to have a place to put their cup of Joe, but let’s be real. The coffee cup and bowl of fruit are just fluff, and anyone with half a brain cell knows that the coffee table is supposed to aid in aerodynamics. I hate to break it to the team, but they could have done much better. And who’s idea was it to build a Suzuki powered couch? Really? Sack up dudes. In a country where everyone seems to feel that a big block with a blower belongs in every car, the Suzuki is a complete let down. Totally not BangShift approved.

I have to tell you the plans have already been rolling around in our heads to crush this record. A few phone calls that we have to make next week may provide us with more gumption and we’ll keep you posted. I have no business taking on another project, but when has that ever stopped us.

Check out more couch video below.

If we do this, we need to do it right. We need to go get that abandoned sofa that’s been under the freeway for months. We’ll have to commandeer it from the homeless dude, but hey, its for science. If we have a coffee table, it needs to be real. Pornos and a giant bowl of Cheetos on it.
