Video: Where They Raced Episode 3: Part 1 The Road Races

We are fully addicted to the “Where They Raced” video series now. Episode 3 is a two parter, and here is Part 1 for you to enjoy. Not only do we enjoy the hell out of each one, but we learn stuff too! This episode talks all about the Santa Monica Road Races, which happened on the roads overlooking the beach, and put Santa Monica on the map during a time where Los Angeles was trying to take over everything in Southern California. With great interviews with guys like Don Pullen, Brian Blain, Pete Eastwood, and Huell Howser, this is a great episode. “Dead Man’s Curve” was also named way back then, although according to host Harold Osmer nobody actually died there. But there are plenty of good crash photos!

Watch and enjoy!

  1. Cyclone03

My Grand Mother used to tell me about the races that seemed to be everywhere around LA when she was little. The board tracks and road races. They lived on Cottener(spl). The street runs parralle to the 405,thier “house” is now a brick building built after the war.

Gooing to the races was a BIG deal then,a day trip and a carnoval.

  2. Harold Osmer

Hi Guys – Harold Osmer here. Thanks for watching Where They Raced.

In terms of sheer official venue numbers, more auto racing has taken place in southern California than any other place in the world. Over 170 tracks from Bakersfield to San Diego. Started in 1903 and continues today.

Some obvious lace like Ascot (actually 4 of them!) and some not so obvious like Santa Monica and Beverly Hills. Keep watching!
