Morning Symphony: Air-Cooled Burnouts At The European Bug-In

Morning Symphony: Air-Cooled Burnouts At The European Bug-In

When writing the other day, I made mention of a car I’ve been giving thought towards lately: a Karmann Ghia done up like a Porsche 356 outlaw (specifically, this Porsche from the movie King of the Mountain). I’m still not an air-cooled VW guy by any stretch of the imagination but there is something about the idea of a hopped-up Ghia that is starting to make more and more sense. With that, I decided to hop down the Internet rabbit hole to see what I could find and I found…well, this. The one lone Ghia in the flick is a slammed-on-it’s-nuts example, but don’t worry, it’s one of many hopped-up VW-based machines here.

This is footage from a European Bug-In show from a couple of years ago, and you are in the burnout box sponsored by Autotechniks, a company that focused on building up old VW buses to do a little bit more than just clog up the roads and camp wherever the driver felt like catching a snooze that day. There isn’t much to it…nice, clean Type 2s and one Karmann Ghia letting the rubber fly at a car show. You have to tip your hat in appreciation…if for no other reason than because there is something so wrong yet so cool about watching a VW bus rip donuts.
