So, among the other projects that are ongoing in his work space, Uncle Tony is busy building up a new Slant Six for his super-lightweight Dodge Dart. He’s intent on making a buzzin’ half-dozen rock in that A-body (as if the engine that was in there wasn’t already a stout little bastard) and he’s hard at work with one of his favorite tools: the carbide drill bit. Of all of the things I’ve ever seen happen inside of DeFeo’s workspace, watching him port heads has to be the most interesting because as someone who hasn’t done a lot of internal engine work, it’s like watching witchcraft being performed by a professional. In my hands, this would be equivalent to giving a four-year-old a grinder…only bad things will come from this, and there would be a trip to the hospital to boot.
From cutting back excess weight to working the bowls for optimum airflow, Uncle Tony will show you the basics of backyard porting and polishing here. And have no doubt, once he’s done shaving metal out of this thing, it will be bolted to an engine, thrown into the Dart and mechanical violence will ensue. Maybe he might match-race the Bottle Rocket Coronet?
Didn’t watch video but the pics show he trimmed the valve guides back. I wouldn’t recommend that myself without going to bigger stems.
