Overkill: Using A NASCAR To Throw A 140 MPH Bowling Strike Is Awesome!

Overkill: Using A NASCAR To Throw A 140 MPH Bowling Strike Is Awesome!

Alright, it’s a PR rub, plain and simple. You meet NASCAR driver Aric Almirola, you meet professional bowler Jason Belmonte, and you get the idea that things are going to be fun. And of course they are: Aric’s machine gets a passenger seat installed, and the plan is to set up a rack of pins that Belmonte will hopefully sent flying by throwing a ball out of the window at speeds over 140 miles an hour at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Some days, work doesn’t suck.

Why do something like this? Why not. Everybody tends to be so caught up in meanings and reasons for actions. This is the kind of thing a couple of kids would dream up in the back of the classroom. “Dude, you know what would be awesome? Throwing a bowling ball out of a moving car and getting a strike.” Regardless of who is being advertised, be it NASCAR, either gentleman’s professional side, the sponsors on the car or Storm Bowling (the supplier of the “Pro Motion” balls used in this stunt), just the simple fact that this got to happen rules all.

It kind of seems like something Beavis and Butt-Head would try, only with less disaster. But since it’s with real people, the sort of disaster the cartoons got into wouldn’t be funny. It has the same “It’s occurred to you to try it, but you know it wouldn’t end well” sort of appeal.

I think it is great! I have been a gear head longer than most of you have been alive. I am also an avid bowler. It was a publicity stunt and it definitely did it’s job of getting attention. Lighten up a bit and get over yourselves!
