Seasoned With Salt: Land-Speed Runs At Lake Gairdner!

Seasoned With Salt: Land-Speed Runs At Lake Gairdner!

Every year, when Bonneville kicks off, you hear nothing but about how magical it is to race on the salt. I haven’t raced on the salt. In fact, I’ve only been on the grounds of Bonneville all of about eighteen hours total, and the closest that I’ve come to racing on the surface is doing eighty miles an hour back to the access road. Don’t do that, by the way…you might miss a divot in the road and bottom out your suspension. I did. But in that short window into the world of land-speed racing, I got to see what teams go through in the name of being ready to line up and shoot for the moon down the course.

We have Bonneville, and in Australia they have Lake Gairdner. At 99 miles long by 30 miles wide, and with salt whose thickness can be measured in feet, it seems like a no-brainer for a land-speed racing venue. Scotty from Street Machine recently went out there to try his luck at land-speed racing with the Big Knob Garage racing team and their Ford roadster. The team is swinging for the fences, and Scotty is going for his racing license from ground zero. Hit play below and enjoy the trip!

That was very, very cool… great video, and obviously a great bunch of guys. Thanks for that! Now I have to add Lake Gairdner on my bucket list of races to do, right up there with Bonneville.
