Someone Finally Made an RX-7 Cool…By Shoving a Jet Engine Up Its Backside (w/Video)

Mazda recently announced that they were finally putting a bullet into their rotary engine program, marking the beginning of the end for the weirdo little engines. We know that they can be made to run hard with turbos and all that stuff, but their fuel efficiency issues, complete lack of low end torque, and sound that makes you want to take a screwdriver to your ears when they are open piped means that we’re not going to miss them much. There were lots of alligator tears and find farewells given to the engine on the interwebs a couple weeks back. We chose to mark the equation by drinking a beer. That’s how we roll.

One dude in Australia apparently took the news in stride and came up with a good solution for how to repower a late model RX-7. He stuck a jet engine up the ass of the car. Literally. He jammed that mother in there and now has himself the world’s only jet powered RX-7. We’re actually really curious to know whether the car still has a conventional engine and drivetrain in it as well. There are a couple of cars here in the USA that have both jet and regular power. Granted, this thing would be “conventionally” powered by a Wankel, but the afterburner makes up for that.

According to the video this car has run as fast as 160mph in the eighth mile. For those of you playing at home, that’s hauling A LOT of ass. We dig people with the stones and crazy streak to build stuff like this. Now we want to drive it!

LS1 swaps have nothing on this… What’s even funnier is that he’s taken one of the few cars that originally didn’t have a piston engine in it, and swapped in a different type of piston-free engine.

      LOL.
And an engine that takes the overheating and bad fuel economy of the original to a whole nother level besides.
