Straight-Eight Showdown: The Engines Run…Now, Will The Old Tanks Actually Move?

Straight-Eight Showdown: The Engines Run…Now, Will The Old Tanks Actually Move?

We’ve been digging this “straight-eight showdown” build-off going on at Cold War Motors. If you haven’t seen the last few episodes, the premise is simple: these guys have two straight-8 powered cars, a Packard and a Buick. Both cars have been down and dead for over forty years, and nobody knew if either car would actually be able to run ever again. But why not make a challenge out of it? So, they have…and the results have been impressive. Both engines were torn down and inspected, and both engines actually didn’t need a metric ton of work in order to turn freely. So, with systems checked out, valves cleaned up, gaskets made, and fresh oil in the blocks, we last heard both of the engines fire off and run. That’s a relief. Now what?

Well, the terms of the build-off were like this: whichever car made a trip to the end of the driveway of the junkyard and back would be the winner. The engines run, we know this…the question now is will either one of these odes to early 1950s technology actually make it that far before putting an end to the show? Or will we lose a driver to carbon monoxide poisoning from the exhaust pouring out of every last rust hole in the exhaust? Only one way to find out…

Really enjoyed the series. I hadn’t previously known about the guys. Thanks to Bangshift for mentioning their work.
