The Roadkill to End All Roadkills – Motorhome Mayhem Saves A 1968 Charger

The Roadkill to End All Roadkills – Motorhome Mayhem Saves A 1968 Charger

Truth be told, I got to sneak peek this episode during the PRI show one nice after we finished up on Roadkill LIVE for the day. We all huddled around the video guy’s computer and watched this show, which is the longest episode (in both time it took to make and length of show) that the guys have ever done. It is also the best one they have ever done in our estimation. Freiburger has a virtual personal salvage yard of cars, or yards of car spread around the greater Los Angles area. One such car was a 1968 Charger that he had wanted to get back on the road for a while but it had been sitting for years and year. The car was “bought” by trading a set of cylinder heads for it. Basically it was a rolling shell missing virtually everything but doors. The guys were starting from ground zero.

The scored one hideous old motorhome for the 440 and literally cut the thing to pieces in the process of getting the engine out. Of course before that they road tripped the motorhome back to the Charger and that in itself could have been an episode. In typical fashion, the project that was going to take three days ended up stretching months due to various setbacks and challenges the guys ran into. In the end though, they prevail and the results are cool enough that you’ll want to jump in your car, find dirt, and get after it. The other thing that rules is the fact that the Charger looks so Mad Max that it probably should have been in the move. To boot, the motorhome 440 has a great road even if it isn’t the biggest powerhouse on the block.

Long story short, this is the best Roadkill that the guys have released and you need to watch it, stat. It pretty much decimates any of the other automotive programming you’ll see on the boob tube or anywhere else for that matter.

I watched it last nite, twice. The part where they are telling the homeowner/friend that they have done him a favor by dumping a gallon or two of ATF on his drive way had me laughing out loud, louder the second time I watched it.

I look back at my Hot Rod collection dad gave me from the 50’s forward…Lots of very technical stuff in there. High level math for automotive equations, Mickey Thompson showing off his Hemi Heads for your new Pontiac, Taking a flat head and a belly tank and setting records at B’ Ville, etc… Now we got you two idiots… That cant install a torque convertor or a dipstick tube correctly and it takes you a year to do it wrong! Wow… Good thing our generation knows but good comedy when they see it! Because you are funny… Very funny!

How are you comparing this to building a record breaking Bonneville salt flats race car? They did this for fun, not anything you just described.

Damn, grandpa, get up off your rocking chair.

This is a comedy show. It’s about cars, but it’s still comedy. The “right” way to build something like that is meticulously and in an un-entertaining fashion. Bear in mind these are the same guys who ran 300 mph at Bonneville in a Camaro, and built The Crusher, and so on and so on. Just because they mess around half-assed for fun, on little sleep, while drinking, with junkers every now and then doesn’t make them idiots.

Great episode. The engine in my 65 came out of an RV as well. And I paid the same thing for my engine and the transmission (which still sits in the back of my one ton after 4 years) as they did.

I think Robs drive way is where stuff that’s not allowed in the hot rod shop goes. Freakin awesome episode.

F-N-F are frigging awesome! That is a tough one to top! I’m a Chevy guy but would own a 68-74 Charger in a heartbeat!

I am SOOOO glad they didn’t chop up that SUPER clean truck!!
I’m assuming it was big block powered?
Since I’m from the rust belt, I can’t even IMAGINE picking up something like that as a motor donar!

Great episode, but then I like them all ! The trip to Alaska ice race is a nother one that i really like. The charger does make a great Road warrior looking vehicle.

Did anybody notice that Freiburger put a bitchin set of perfect wide black steelies on the Charger before they started really doing anything?!?!? Must be they needed the old junk to put on the Fury…

I hope they do a story on this for the mag! I want to know what it has for wheels and tires & what exhaust they ended up putting on it!

As far as the converter is concerned…who HASN’T had trouble getting on fully seated at one time or another?!?!? Or for that matter, has anyone NEVER made a mistake building something?!?

I found it odd that Freiburger harped on how bad the Thermoquad carbs are, yet he decided to retain it in the interest of of keeping with the lowbuck theme. However, in a later view of the engine, it has a freshly store-bought rebuilt TQ on the engine. I dunno about you guys, but where I come from, those carbs are $200-$300 rebuilt from the parts store. Doesn’t sound lowbuck to me.
