When you were a kid playing with your Hot Wheels, did you ever simulate accidents? I sure as hell did. I had one car in particular, a Dodge Monaco cop car, that in my twisted little mind, was invincible and could and would crash through all of the other cars with no repercussions whatsoever. It came in real handy the few times my younger brother decided that he wanted to play with my cars. I guess I shouldn’t have tried to “drive” through his hand, because we learned, about ten years later, that he had flushed a ton of my cars down the upstairs toilet in retaliation. I guess he took it kind of personal. But the concept was fun…here was this cop car mowing through piles of other cars at speeds no Monaco would ever be able to attain with little more than paint scratches.
It’s a good thing, then, that nobody really attempts that in real life. At least, while they aren’t occupying the vehicle. This footage, from Switzerland, shows vehicles getting slammed into other vehicles at 200 KM/H (about 124 MPH). The results are as horrifyingly brutal as you’d imagine, with cars winding up as intertwined scrap metal. If there is a point to this other than sick fun for the crash testers, we fail to see it. We just see an Opel Omega take on a Volvo wagon and wind up as a modern art piece.
