He’s leapt from airplanes with no parachute, jumped cars onto barges, crashed and survived harder than few others on Earth, raced NASCAR, and made millions along the way. All that said and Travis Pastrana is still at it and he’s still one of the best in the world at whatever the hell his job is. In this case he was racing at the Red Bull Straight Rhythm event held at Pomona, home of the NHRA Winternationals and World Finals. This event is basically a dirt bike drag race with all kinds of jumps, table tops, and whoops in the middle, forcing riders to figure the fastest way through the whole thing so as to beat their competitor to the other end.
Pastrana is a lot of things but dumb isn’t one of them so applying his brain, he figured out that the longer the rear tire is on the ground the faster he can go through the course so he avoids jumps and flying for a large part of the course. According to the announcers, his strategy is different than the rest of the competitors and while that may be true, it seems he had the better idea because in this matchup he knocks off his competitor and decides to pull a back flip jump at the finish line just for fun.
This is a very impressive thing to watch because it is so physically demanding and while it is nice to “have” a strategy it is entirely another thing to execute it. Watching Pastrana attack this course is like poetry in motion. The guy is just instinctually fast and that’s always fun to watch because we know if we tried this we’d probably be dead.
