Unknown Parts Counter Guy: Trust But Verify The Work That Is Being Done On Your Car!

The legion of minions that compose the face of automotive maintenance to the general public is a very mixed bag in this time and age to put it very mildly. You have counter-clerks at parts stores whose entire job qualification is to fog a mirror and play Google-Fu with whatever system the store runs. Having mechanical knowledge, technical skill, or even giving half a shit about cars in general isn’t on that list. You have service advisors that can bridge the gap between “mindless” and “predatory”, dealership mechanics that know they are getting screwed over in the long run, and the oil change shops where they can never get the car done fast enough. But today…oh, today, boys and girls, do I have a gem for you.

Now, there isn’t much I know about how this cobbled-together cluster of piping that is supposed to be an aftermarket exhaust system came to be. I don’t know if this was a shop that royally screwed this pooch or if this is the neighborhood shadetree “expert” that offered up a price too good to pass up. Whatever the case, an individual with the I.Q. of the mayonnaise on my two-hour-old fast food burger and the welding skills of your average three-year-old took and botched the installation of this kit pretty badly. Just hit play…you’ve got to see it to believe it for yourself.

Make sure the people you hire to work on your vehicles are reputable. I’m not saying the guy down the street is a bad call to make…many of you are that guy and probably help out someone and do the best job you can do. I’m just saying that the guy who says he’ll fit an entire exhaust system for a fifty dollar bill and a large pepperoni pizza might be a bad call to make, y’know?

(Thanks to Kevin Brown for the tip!)

Hey now, c’mon guys didn’t you ever use a cut up soup can & some hose clamps to fix an exhaust leak before? You guys are too picky, geesh!

I remember as a kid (early 80’s) there was a kit you could buy to fix your exhaust. All it consisted of was a can and some sort of heat wrap.
