Mark Stielow is one of the Pro Touring world’s true heroes. A GM engineer who was one of the earliest adapters of modern suspension technology into classic American iron, his ever more bad ass series of first generation Camaros have often lead the way for the advancement of the Pro Touring scene. The guys at Hot Rod Magazine realized this too and decided to pit Stielow’s most current project, the Red Devil 1969 Camaro against a brand new Camaro ZL1 at Michigan’s Gingerman Raceway. What’s neat is that they used Stielow as the driver in both cars, removing the talent variable from the equation as both cars were to be driven by a guy who has lots of it. Mark worked as an engineer on the ZL1 and he knows the car as good or better than anyone on the planet.
This is a cool video as we get to see both cars driven hard and pushed to their limits. We’re not going to give anything away, but we will say that Stielow’s talent as a wheelman is verified here when his lap times are compared to some made by a professional road racing driver on the same track only a few weeks apart.
Honestly, we went into this pulling for Stielow’s car because on the face of things, the ol’ ’69 should be the underdog…right? Watch and find out.
Press play to see Camaro on Camaro violence at Gingerman Raceway!
I may be a Ford guy, but I want me some Red Devil Camaro, oh ya!
Cool video, and I like David’s idea at the end of doing this with Corvette’s. I would love to see a new ‘vette up against a tweaked early ’70’s (chrome bumper) style ‘vette. Would like to build that one myself someday 😉
I hate you Freibooger. Why is everything green?
The 69 sounded and looked bitchen, I’ll take it!
That is just AWESOME!
Would love to see Three of the toughest Camaros go head to head though:
The RED DEVIL vs F-BOMB vs BIG RED!
Red devil is badass, but I want to see the new ZR1 corvette run the track with Stielow driving, where weight and horsepower are more even. The ZL1 brought a knife to a gunfight at 4200 lbs…
how about the red devil vs r.j. gottlieb’s big red camaro for round 2?
