Top Fuel motorcycle racer Steve Carey was riding his machine at Santa Pod’s Dragstalgia 2013 event recently and suffered a pretty nasty wreck after his bike went into bad tire shake at about 60′ feet into the run. While you may shrug and say that things couldn’t be all that bad if the bike had only traveled about sixty feet, you need to realize that by the first block on the track that motorcycle is traveling close to 100mph. On top of that, the motorcycle is pulling like a freight train and the rider is basically holding on for dear life.
As you will see in the video below, Carey’s run started off well and the bike appeared to be doing what all gnarly fuel bikes do, which is to carry the front tire up on that big rear slick for most of the run. Unfortunately, as mentioned above the rear slick starts to go square and wrap up on itself. This starts a chain of events that Carey and frankly no mortal man could possibly recover from. The bike gets into a violent tank slapper and then launches Carey off the side despite his best efforts to stay on top of the two wheeled terror.
As you will see, he had enough speed and momentum that by the time the bike and Steve come to a stop they are almost all the way to the finish line. We have been told that Carey came out of this with bruises and a shoulder injury that will heal. That’s a damned miracle in our book and this video is certainly a testament to the guts it takes to sit on top of one of those motorcycles. While this video is minutes long, this whole sequence in real time would have happened in the span of a couple seconds. Slowing it down sure makes it apparent how violent the entire scene is! One of the commenters on the video claims that they counted more than 22 flips o the motorcycle through the course of the video. The thing pinwheels and pencil rolls almost all the way down the track!

Amazing footage, first of all glad he wansn’t hurt really bad. Those are very nasty playthings, big onions to hop on top of one of ’em.
