Summer isn’t exactly over at BangShift Mid-West, but the rains that have been pummeling Western Kentucky over the last couple of days are a reminder that sunshine and warm weather are about to be less of a guarantee and more of a question mark, at best. Some days, it’s just not worth getting out into the shop or even out of the house, and some days you might just want to stay inside and enjoy the shelter of the great indoors. It isn’t everyday that BangShift encourages you to look to video games, but the latest smash-and-bash racer, “Wreckfest”, just might be up your alley.
The game has been under development for years. I first saw the tech demos for the game, then known as “Next Car Game”, late in 2013. Back then, all I knew was that the same studio that made Next Car Game was the same group that made one of my favorite games to date, FlatOut…which combined the fun of racing cars with the serious fun of turning the human behind the wheel into a launchable projectile in the spirit of some of the most horrific seatbelt PSAs ever to be pushed out. Over the last few years the technology that makes Wreckfest cool, like soft-body dynamics for the vehicles that create surprisingly realistic deformation has been tested and honed in with demos, betas and early PC-based variations.
Now available for Playstation 4 and Xbox One, Wreckfest is a straight-up demolition derby bonanza that takes one of our favorite titles of the past, “Test Drive: Eve of Destruction” and ramps the meter up a bit. More cars, more track designs, and a level of sheetmetal carnage that far surpasses most any pure racer made. Check out this review by IGN and see for yourself why you might want to raid the kids’ game console on those upcoming cold, rainy days…
