(Photos by Wes Allison) – There are certain categories in NHRA drag racing that appeal to the hardest of hardcore fans. The machines that compete in Competition Eliminator and both the alky funny car and dragster ranks are among them. We truly love these classes, especially the alcohol classes because the racing is fast, the stories are legend, and the environment is far different from that you will see and hear in the professional pits.

The vast majority of the alcohol teams do not have unlimited resources to run their programs so their are typically family based, rely on crews that are part timers at best and volunteering is part of the program on many cars as well. That being said, these are cars that run deep into the 5-second zone and in the case of top alcohol dragsters, above 280mph!

One of the neatest cars of the entire event can be found in these images and that’s the C/Street Roadster of Ed Sigmon. Ed has competed at every single NHRA Internationals race and is such a legend, one of his old cars is actually in the NHRA Wally Parks Motorsports Museum adjacent to the track. You’ll know which one it is as soon as you see it.
