Bad News: Wisconsin Junkyard Troy Auto Parts, Filled With 1950s, 1960s, And 1970s, Iron Closing – 4,000 Cars To Be Crushed

There’s nothing good about this story other than the fact that it is not too late to try and save what little that can be saved from the remains of Troy Auto Parts in East Troy, Wisconsin. The wrecking yard, which has been open for decades is closing and the entire property must be cleared of cars, trucks, and parts by the winter time. If there is one thing that makes us raise an eyebrow it is that statement because with 4,000 cars to crush or otherwise relieve themselves of and only a couple of months before legitimate winter conditions set in around the place, there’s not near enough time to get all of that inventory gone.

Troy auto parts opened in 1972 and at this moment covers 27-acres of land. Considering that the average junkyard across the country ranges from 5-10, this place is enormous. As you will see in the photos below, they have some pretty amazing variety and it all looks like it was frozen in time. There’s undoubtedly some stuff that came into that yard in 1972, got dropped onto the ground and has never moved from the position it was set in. The photos that they posted of the place show an seemingly endless supply of pretty decent old hulks. The Mustang is obviously badly rotted and all but broken in half but considering the fact that the cars are weather beaten and exposed to the elements, there’s a lot of good metal there.

I have seen a place with 1,000 old cars in it but I have never seen a place with 4,000 old cars on it. I really can’t even conceive of the size and scope of the crushing operation. If they were to start crushing today it would still take them months to empty the place out. We do not want to see that happen but if it cannot be stopped we want to make sure that BangShifters have a shot to get what they can from the cars before they are gone forever!

Thanks to Pat and Arild for the tip off on this story!

Is that a Merc I see 3 rows back from the bubble top impala? The chevy styleline is in better shape than mine! Such a shame, I hope some of this can be salvaged.

I have been to this yard several times over the years as have some people I know. There is a reason this stuff is sitting there. They were not willing to work with people on price in the past and on one trip would not sell parts that we had called ahead on to make sure were there.

    URGENT!
I am desperately seeking an old one ton or bigger. I am talking about a truck that is 4 wheel drive, 8 foot bed (or bigger), 1970’s – 1980’s (I do not want a computer chip in it). I understand that I have got to get parts for it since it probably will not run however if those could be located as well, it would be greatly appreciated.
Please email me with any info – thank you [email protected]

This collection is the legacy of a man named Jim Peterson. I do not live in the area any more and have not seen Jim for about 30 years. The yard started with the inventory of Dreske’s Auto Salvage in West Allis, WI. I used to work doing odds and end for “Pete”. Pete closely guarded two large buildings of cars he cared very much for, one of which had collapsed on the cars and he just left it that way for decades. I assume that Pete has passed away. Why the big rush to quickly kill his yard without leaving time for things to get to people that can use and appreciate them? I can only guess there’s some local tyrants with the usual axe to grind, and they finally took one last charge to instantly kill it and make it go away. Very sad, and typical for the region.
