Craigslist Find: This 2JZ Powered 1965 El Camino Is One Polarizing Machine – What Do You Think?

Craigslist Find: This 2JZ Powered 1965 El Camino Is One Polarizing Machine – What Do You Think?

We were sent this Craigslist link by about 15 people so giving credit to all the fine tipsters would read like a phone book, so thanks for sending this to us. Some of you won’t be so thankful because some of you are going to really, really hate this thing. We’e not in that group. Why would people hate this? Mainly because it has an engine that lots of people revile, a turbocharged Toyota 2JZ inline six. Capable of producing huge power, they are loved by fans of Japanese performance cars but lots of muscle cars guys don’t think to highly of them. Remember when Hot Rod ran the first generation Camaro with the 2JZ in it and the rage was almost palpable? That’s why some guys are going to hate this car.

The ’65 Elky is clean and straight, rolls on a set of wheels that seem like they want to be iconic BBS pieces but aren’t quite, it has a stick shift transmission backing up the engine and it rides on a complete  RideTech air suspension. The interior has a set of good Recaro seats to keep the driver and passenger in place, there are Wilwood brakes on all four corners, and there’s meaty 275mm wide tires front and rear. The rear end is a Moser 12-bolt and the exhaust is a large-ish diameter single system that looks to be custom built and nicely fit.

Say what you will about the wheels, motor, etc but this car isn’t a pile. The interior needs finishing and there are probably some other odds and ends that needs to be tended to but overall this is a well finished car in our view. It would be awesome to get out and thrash on it, drag race it, do burnouts with it and then make people completely confused by it when the exhaust note comes bellowing out of that single pipe.

We clearly don’t hate it. Do you?

Nice stance, look and wheels. The engine compartment, although not flashy, looks good and it has the right amount of pedals.

Not so sure about that interior. The metal flake wheel with the short yourself out to get horn to work is not cool.

Why doesn’t this site have an edit function? “flat rocks” is what I meant to say. Flat rock is about how boring an SBC is….

2 guys sittin on the couch…”Dude what ya gonna do with the motor from the Toyota that you rolled? I dunno man what ya gonna do with that el Camino under the tarp in your back yard?” Well, you get it

I’d buy it if the price were right, yank the toy motor and e-bay it. Replace it with a proper RAT and e-bay it again.

oh man, 2JZ for the win! If you seriously think this car is better off with a bbc then you are drinking (and i’m talking about production based bbc, not race mill, because that 2JZ is production..) and youtube 2JZ Supra if you think this is your wife’s camry motor

I’ve been accused for all of my 61 years of liking “orphans” of cars. I like this one. dare to be different. Then again, I think a Pacer sleeper with a hot 401 is a good idea!

I have a ’67 XKE 4.2 Jag motor that I would like to build a car around. Obviously I think inline 6’s are cool.
