We told you that part of the great fun we had at PRI 2014 is seeing stuff that is either sitting on a shelf to get people into a booth, sitting on a shelf to get people talking about a brand, or sitting on a shelf as a kind of sociological experiment to see how people will react to it. Well, consider this absolutely mammoth centrifugal supercharger from the fine people at Vortech as hitting every one of the aforementioned categories. The thing stopped Chad and I dead in our tracks after we got into the show early one morning to shoot some photos of stuff because the rest of the world flooded in. There was no one at the display when we walked up so I headed back there later in the week to see if there any any information available.
No surprisingly, there was not a lot of info flowing but we did learn a few things. The first is that this is a prototype and the impetus of building it was to create a supercharger that could be useful to pro modified racers. Right off the bat we’re talking about the need to support some 3,000hp, so that’s something to think about right there. This is the first and only one of these in existence (that they would admit to) right now and there is currently not a plan (they were willing to share) to get it on a specific car for testing. We’re sure that there is lots of in-house work that gets done with a unit like this before it actually is bolted to a running and driving car.
The possibilities are pretty substantial here. Imagine a FOURTH potential combo in pro mod to go along with the nitrous, roots blown, and turbo cars that now populate the class. As most of you know, centrifugally supercharged cars typically have the loudest and most ear splitting exhaust note and with this massive amplifier an alky hemi or big wedge engine, we can only imagine the racket! Some huge round numbers were floated out like 6,000 CFM, etc but we were pretty much blocked at every turn for specific information. We understand, obviously, but man does it make it fun to speculate where one of these could show up, right?
