Piston 101: Cast Or Forged, Which One is Best for Your Engine? Should You Always Go For The “Full Race” Option?

Piston 101: Cast Or Forged, Which One is Best for Your Engine? Should You Always Go For The “Full Race” Option?

As car guys and gals we are often guilty of going all in on every single thing we do to our hot rods and race cars. And sometimes this makes sense. I mean if we are going to be putting together a car that is going to get raced a lot, then it makes sense to put in race parts. But lots of times we build engines, transmissions, etc, as if they were going into a race car when in fact they are just going to be used in our cruiser. I know I’m guilty of it, and have done it several times over the years. To be honest, sometimes the reason we do that is because it is easier to go with the ultra high performance part rather than learn what part would be most appropriate. That’s where Piston 101 comes in!

In this video, our friend Trey McFarland, who has decades of experience in the aftermarket piston world, is going to give a quick rundown on Forged vs Cast pistons. Watch, learn something, and use the info to make sure you are getting the right parts for your next build.

Video Description:

When you’re shopping for the best pistons for your engine, one of the first things you’re going to have to determine is if you should use a forged or cast piston. In other words, when should you plan on stepping up to a forged piston in your high performance or race engine. That’s why we brought in piston expert Trey McFarland from RaceTec Pistons to help you determine the best piston choice for your specific engine application. He’ll discuss some qualities of each piston design, what the pros and cons are of each one, and how piston choice is related to the type of engine you’re building—street performance, drag racing, circle track, etc. Shop RaceTec Pistons at Summit Racing: https://www.summitracing.com/redirect…
