If synthetic oil is superior to conventional, even if it isn’t anything fancy, how do we know if there is a difference between the cheap synthetics and the expensive ones? Thanks to our friend Lake Speed Jr, aka The Motor Oil Geek, we know that real science will tell us whether or not one particular oil decreases engine wear more than another. We can find that out by testing the oil to see how much ring, bore, and bearing material is in it. This video shows you a lot of data, with a great explanation as to what it all means.

Video Description:
Do name brand oils like Amsoil and Royal Purple provide better wear protection compared to store brands like Super Tech and NAPA? Using the dyno at Shaver Specialty Racing Engines, we precisely measured engine wear thanks to a new piston ring coating and used oil analysis. This is the same 450 horsepower, flat tappet engine and test procedure we used to test the Walmart synthetic oil versus the name brand conventional oil.

This time we choose 4 oils that are synthetic, 5W-30 and meet the same API specification, so let’s answer the question – Is it really worth paying twice as much per quart for the name brand oil?
