We happened to be announcing a drag race on Saturday night at New England Dragway in Epping, NH and our pal Peter Farber was there. Peter races Pro Mod and does so both locally an as part of the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod class. He was involved in a nasty wreck with Ricky Smith that saw the whole front of his car, engine and all, cleaned off past the finish line. Pete as well as the guys at G-Force race cars and The Shop who respectively rebuilt the entire front half off the car and painted the body with a completely new scheme.
With his fancy pants new piece, Farber was loaded to bear at Epping and wanted to own both ends of the track racord. Unfortunately the drag racing gods didn’t agree and Farber’s team struggled to get the car down the track.
On a late afternoon test run the car did not sound all that healthy on the top end and then there was big smoke from the pipes. It was not a stretch for us to make the call on the PA that he had nicked a piston or two. Little did we know that he melted those babies Chernobyl style!
Farber said that a new supercharger was having lots of issues with where it was sending the air and it was so uneven a couple of the holes were going very lean. Look at the photos below you’ll agree! Consider that these are not some schlub bottom of the barrel pistons, either. These babies are big dollars and are made to exising standards.
On a side note, the team thrashed and actually put new cylinder liners into the block while replaceing the melted slugs. On the next run it broke a rod and cracked the block. Yikes!
You might want to check a plug or two, but that looks a little lean to me…
