Jimmy Klaavuniemi and his 1966 Chevrolet Bel Air have been quite busy in the last year, having run Drag Week, the travel to and from Sweden, and so on and so forth. The nine-second Chevy gets the miles put on one way or another, but for the last few days it’s been running in more familiar weather: cold, snowy and icy.
The 2017 Speed Weekend took place in Åsunda, and yes, that is ice that the Bel Air is running on. Nothing says “fun” quite like making a car with four-digit horsepower levels hook on ice, right? But that isn’t the best part of this run…not that Klaavuniemi can drive the holy hell out of this Bel Air when the rear end is trying to pass the front end, not that what should be the ultimate pedalfest practice is really a neat and fast run. No, the best aspect of this lap is that the car is filled with friends. That’s right…pushing 150 miles an hour, on ice, in a car the size of a small battleship. The Finnish have a word that best works for our reaction: Perkele. No sanctioning body here would even consider allowing it!
Seems like a good time! There’s no friction and nothing to hit. Assuming it’s cold enough (Finland!) it doesn’t seem too terribly insane.
You haven’t driven on ice very much have you?
Great vid!
Can’t help but revel in these guys fun..Way cool..
