Tour Nebraska Coverage: Hundreds of Hot Rods Hit The Highway In The Heartland

Tour Nebraska Coverage: Hundreds of Hot Rods Hit The Highway In The Heartland

(Words and photos by Scott Liggett) – Hot Rod Magazine’s famous Power Tour is now in full swing. But, last weekend was another classic car tour right in the state of Nebraska. The Nebraska Rod & Custom Association gathered just shy of 400 classics, rods, muscle cars, and really cool trucks for their 24th Annual Tour Nebraska.

Never heard of Tour Nebraska? Well, neither did your reporter until 400 hot rods rolled through town two years ago. I was determined to find out more about this event. So, last year I joined in on the fun. The idea is pretty simple. The car club, NRCA picks a town as a home base for the weekend. Then each day, they take off in a different direction in a big loop and end up back at the home base town. This allows the participants to have one hotel room for the weekend. No hauling bags, checking in and out of different hotels everyday. There are only two requirements to join in on the fun. First, you have to join the NRCA, a whole $15.00/year. Second, your chosen vehicle must be at 30 years old. No modern junk allowed.
We talked with the club president, Gary Hedman, about how this event got started. He told us that 25 years ago a bunch of his car buddies road tripped to a big car show. This was one of those car shows at some fairgrounds where you just sit in a lawn chair. That weekend turned out to be really hot and humid, and not much fun. But, he and his buddies kept talking about how much fun they had driving back and forth. From that weekend, Tour Nebraska was born and twenty four years later is still going strong.
This first crop of photos was from the Friday evening kick off and registration, where the participants get their packets with maps, instructions, lunch vouchers, and such. This is where everyone can meet new people, see the cars they will driving with on the tour.

They run it the first week of June, usually. Deadline to register is a couple weeks ahead of time. Registration usually starts in January/February.

It has a custom chassis using Jaguar front and rear suspensions. He has just enough of a pickup bed to carry the wheel chair. Everyone was asking if it would do wheelies. He said it is too nose heavy.
