Burnout Video: Watch Kurt Johnson Break In A Set Of Slicks In A Naked Chassis Former Pro Stocker

One of the things that few people understand about the world of professional drag racing and pro stock specifically is that the work during racing season is on a 24/7 cycle. This isn’t a deal where the car gets loaded into a trailer and it sits there until the next race. There is a modicum of things that are happening to every aspect of the car in preparation for the next event. Even teams that are not hitting every single race like Kurt and Warren Johnson are still working their asses off to be ready to go for events like this weekend’s NHRA race in Atlanta. This video is both proof of that and it reveals something that many of you may not know about pro stock teams and that is the fact that they all have a “tire break in car”.

Said “tire break in car” is typically an old, stripped pro stock car with enough motor in it to do big smokey burnouts to break in and season new slicks. In the case of WJ and KJ, said car is an old Nitro Fish sponsored machine and their burnout pad is the concrete area behind their race shop. Judging by how much actual rubber is accumulated on the ground, this is the same spot they have been using for decades. As some of you may know, Greg Anderson and Jason Line’s shop is within a couple hundred yards of Mooresville Dragway in North Carolina so they have a car that is a bare chassis with a motor and drivetrain in it. They hook a trailer up to it full of mounted tires and drive the vehicle over to the track unhook the trailer and start the process of “breaking in” the slicks. We’d all want that job for a day, right? So now you know what’s going on here, let’s show you some video so we can watch Kurt Johnson break in a set of slicks!

Why can’t I find the ‘play’ button for the video? I’ve had this problem several times since the switch to the new format. Is it just me? Or am I just stupid? sheesh.

Can it be possible the professor and son are overthinking things a bit? How is this procedure different/better than a garden variety burnout?

Rock, you saw 11 seconds of it. Those guys will do repeated burnouts and hops to break in the tires. All the teams do it. They are either all nuts or there is some benefit to it.

Could NOT find any play button anywhere nor the usual triangle to make this play!!!!!!
