Drag Freak: This 1987 Toyota Has A Rear Mounted Chevy 4.3 V6, Four Link Suspension And More Questions Than Answers

We know what you are thinking. Ok, we actually have no idea what you are thinking because we’re not even sure what to think about this insane mashup of ideas that vary from interesting to completely off the deep end weird. So you are seeing a 1987 Toyota truck that was essentially chopped off after the cab, re-engineered with a custom rear frame which terminated with a Ford 9″ rear, four link suspension, and coil over shocks. Sitting just ahead of that stuff is a built up GM 4.3L V6 engine that is backed by a Powerglide transmission. The seller claims that the truck is good for 12s in the quarter mile although we’re not sure we’d want to drive it that fast.

The cab is gutted as you would expect with just the necessities of operation present and accounted for. Under the hood where the original four banger would have lived is the battery and not a whole lot else. The weight of the truck was not given in the ad that we could find but it has to be pretty light. The iron V6 isn’t helping that much but at least the weight will aid in planting the slicks. Word to the wise…replace those slicks. Just sayin’.

The rear fenders were formed from sheetmetal and must work as good sound deflectors for the upswept headers that have bullet style race mufflers mounted on after the collectors. The thing kind of looks like an animal with its ears pinned back when you see it from a side view.

The truck is like a somewhat MORE freaky version of the famed Drag Week “stretchy truck” minus the stretch, the horsepower, the turbos, and the big block. Why did someone build this? Easy, they wanted to. Maybe they had all this stuff lying around and they decided to challenge themselves into making something. Maybe they went on a month long bender and this is what happened. The details are anyone’s guess really.

We’d recommend someone take it on Drag Week but the reality is that we don’t think it would be fast enough to do damage in any of the classes but it sure would get lots of attention, that is for certain! This machine is not our taste or speed but someone out there built it and clearly it has been raced and beat up on so that beats guys who just talk about it and never do anything, right?

If you bought it would you race it as is? Modify it? Wear a welding mask while driving it? You tell US!

    Aw come on!

The Springview Home For The Mentally Incapable’s custom shop did a great job. Especially the Schizophrenic Ward, who designed the whole thing……

Oh come on, y’all havent seen mud bog trucks or dirt drag racing? Swap that 6 for an 8 or add forced induction. Paddle tires and you’re all set.
