Funny Car Forensics: Finding This Old Body Was The Tip Of The Iceberg For An Awesome Drag Racing Story

Funny Car Forensics: Finding This Old Body Was The Tip Of The Iceberg For An Awesome Drag Racing Story

Tommy Lee Byrd’s YouTube Channel (blown64vette) is awesome because the guy posts stuff that ranges from racing coverage to stories like this one about an old funny car body that he bought and then did all the historic research on. As it turns out, this thing has lived about 10 lives and some of them involve large names in drag racing and some of them involve wins at majorly historic events and even championships over the years.

Like all things in racing, the parts and pieces come to life when we associate them with people and places and that is exactly what Tommy does here. It’s pretty fantastic to see how diligent he was at hunting down the lineage of the car. Hell, it even involves the story of a guy basically disappearing from the face of the Earth after driving the thing.

Funny car bodies are interesting things because when they are new, they are all sexy and high tech and swoopy and good. Many of them get blown to bits, burned to the ground, or otherwise mangled so when we see one that has not met that fate but has survived an outdoor living for what looks like 20 years, you KNOW there’s a story behind it.

While the original chassis is long gone, this would be a neat piece for someone to do a nostalgia funny car with, especially when you learn the history that Tommy lays out for us so well here.

Give this video a watch, it really is cool, especially if you are a drag racing history dork like we are!
