A Critical Review: Gale Banks Watches The Hoonigan Diesel Dyno Video And Has Plenty To Say

A Critical Review: Gale Banks Watches The Hoonigan Diesel Dyno Video And Has Plenty To Say

Several years ago I read Al Michaels’ book. It was filled with colorful and fun stories of his career and life as a sports broadcaster. Many of them from his early career were centered around his relationship with and work alongside of Howard Cosell. During one story, Cosell was able to basically stand in front of an unruly group and command them all to pay attention and get their stuff together. Michaels was astonished by watching this little guy basically take control of the whole situation by himself. Michaels asked him how he did it. His answer? “Kid, I KNOW who the F I am.”

Gale Banks knows who the F he is.

There’s vitrtually no-one else in the high performance aftermarket that could pull this particular video off that you will see below. Long story short, the Hoonigan guys are stuffing a Duramax in a 5th generation Camaro (not the first time this has been done….see this) and they are going try to get it to run 200mph in the standing mile. They have built an engine. With aftermarket heads, compound turbochargers, and other hot rodding tricks they took it to the dyno looking for 1,000hp. They made a video of their adventure and the results they achieved.

Enter Gale Banks.

Apparently Gale’s friends, fans, and followers knew that he’d likely shove a head gasket out when he saw this video so they blew up his messages, phone, and social media channels to get him to watch it. Oh, he watched it. This video is him re-watching and commenting on the stuff he is seeing. It is savage, it is educational, it is honest, it is raw, and it is unflinching. This to us is a Howard Cosell moment for Banks in the sense that if other people did this, it would likely be seen as sour grapes or jealousy. Gale’s list of accomplishments is so freaking long that he certainly isn’t trying to “break in” to the market and we all know about his decades long work to make diesel engines powerful, efficient, and to do it cleanly.

This is a jaw dropper and for reasons we don’t normally consider in 2020. Usually when we say that, it’s someone doing something stupid, obnoxious, profane, or just plain dumb. Here it’s because this is about as brutally honest as it gets. Watch.

That was truely great! What a great (not to mention intelligent) guy Mr. Banks is!

Interesting to see how -hot- things can get around a dyno, literally and figuratively. Don’t I recognize a guy in that room who had the sig line on the forum here, “There are people who’s opinions I value; You are not one of them”? (Chuckle.)

Yep, there still are some guys out there that know what’s going on. Sadly I don’t know who will replace them when they are gone.

If you don’t act like an asshole, people will want to learn from you. Im all for a guy telling it like it is but these guys openly admit that this is a learning experience and they are looking for whatever help they can get. You can be the smartest guy in the room without telling everyone else they are idiots

I’ve learned a lot from a**holes and I was an idiot. People will listen even if your an a**hole if there is knowledgeto be passed. Truly everyone is an idiot when learning something new and should have the mind set they are an idiot to keep an open mind.

Nor do I believe they really want to learn something. Some of their mistakes could have been rendered with a google search. They want content. If they wanted to learn, they would use their viewership(3.39M sub on YT) to leverage a deal with a big name. Why not call up Banks and work together?

The Hoonidiots should just stick to doing burnouts in their compound. Great input from Mr. Banks.

That was the real world speaking. I’ve hated on those hoondiots for how long with their beard wax/tattoo/lookalike schtick and now Banks blows them out of the water for their insipid antics and circus show.

    Thanks, from the resident dinosaur………

Bitter that you’re old and tired and didn’t get do fun stuff when you where young?

I couldn’t care less about the Hoonigans, but personally I hate pedophiles, rapists and thieves. Hate people that look a certain way, or do stuff that I don’t find interesting… not so much.

Gale Banks knows more than most people about diesel engines. He’s also a spokesperson for his own company, a company that sells… aftermarket parts for diesel engines.

Banks -is- being a little harsh there. There might have been a situation where there was no evac available and thus the short pull.

      1. Stickman

If that is the case than at least run a snorkel from the side door to the intake. At no point should the air be pulled from the room. Those room get hot.

Banks has worked hard with the California Air Resource Board to allow the modifications that are allowed now. Can You imagine what they would be like without his input? He was the one that pushed for testing of aftermarket parts etc with CARB. Hot Rodders should bow down to him
