Land Speed Action Gallery: Summer Photos From SCTA El Mirage

(Photos by Zane McNary) – The SCTA season has been trucking along this year at the El Mirage dry lake bed. Obviously the situation at Bonneville is bad and we hope it fixes itself sooner rather than later so we can resume that program but the SCTA is more than just Bonneville. Their “bread and butter” race course is El Mirage and they have been hammering that dusty hunk of Earth hard in 2015.

Here we have a collection of photos from El Mirage that were shot by ace picture taker Zane McNary. One of the things we love about these photos is that they really capture the essence of the event with all of the different styles of cars, the flying dust plumes, and in some cases, the chewed up tires after a run. This weekend we will be at the ECTA land speed meet in Wilmington, Ohio where there’s a lot less dust but the same amount of incredible diversity that has always kept us hooked on the land speed genre.

From the familiar shapes of American iron from the muscle car era to the bizarrely altered dimensions of different coupes and sedans, this is the last truly “free” type of racing. If you have an idea you can chase it. If it is a good idea you may become a legend. If it is a crummy idea you’ll be sent packing back to the drawing board like so many others before you.

This is land speed racing and these photos of an awesome job of telling the tale.
