RacingJunk Find: Mike Roy’s Iconic Drag Week 1971 Monte Carlo Is For Sale – 2,000hp, 7-Second Slips, Steel!

One of Drag Week’s most awesome, iconic, and completely bad ass cars is for sale. The 1971 Monte Carlo that was run so successfully by Mike Roy for years is looking for a new home. This thing is all steel except for the hood and front bumper. It is huge, it is heavy, and it has runs 7.60s at 187mph and then cruised down the road like no big thing. The wheelies were awesome, the 2,000hp twin turbocharged 540ci big block Chevy still is, but one of the things we really remember about this car is the fact that Roy would run the entire Drag Week on the same set of tires.

Track and street, this thing would go down the road just like you are looking at it here. No trailer, no fancy stuff, just the monster car, its big meats, and two guys rumbling along. I can vividly remember coming up on this thing one night during Drag Week years ago. Freiburger and I just reveled in how freaking awesome the thing was and its story is even better.

Mike Roy bought this car as a wreck that had basically died in a fire. He built the car, including the engine. It has a Larry Larson back half job, it has all nice stuff, fuel injection of course, and a pair of Precision Turbos that make about 30psi of boost for the Rat motor to chew on.

It was so freaking awesome when this car cracked into the 7-second zone and then they were able to get it all the down into the mid-7.60s for peak performance numbers. As you will see in the photos, the tires really get their ass kicked on this thing. So much weight, so much power, and a load of traction means that those sidewalls are earning their money to get the car moving.

Buy this legend. Someone.
