It has been a while since we’ve highlighted some of Les Mayhew’s killer video work here on the front page of BangShift and since we noticed that he recently dropped some new content onto his Nitro America YouTube channel we wanted to throw it all up in your business here. This video was actually shot last year but was released just about two weeks ago and it is a fantastic five minute look into the final round at the Nightfire Nationals contested at Firebird Raceway in Boise, Idaho. This race is one of the premier nostalgia nitro funny car events in the country and a win in Boise is one you can really hang your hat on for a whole season. As you will see in the video, John Hale met up with Dan Horan in the final round for a classic Mustang Vs Camaro battle at the historic track operated by the New family.
Like in all of Les Mayhew’s videos he does an awesome job of telling the story through the camera. He doesn’t throw music at it, he doesn’t get all fancy pants, he just uses the right shots, from the right places, at the right time to really take the viewer inside what’s going on. As we have said before this is the mark of a creative guy who understands the subject matter. Les’s use of sound also needs to be applauded. Take the opening sequence here for example. We see John Hale strapping into his car as a pre-final round prayer is repeated in just enough volume for us to know that it is there and to set the tone and seriousness of the mood. The best compliment we can give to Les’s work is that it is just intrusive enough to be great. He takes us to the places we want to be and in the way we want to do it, as observers. Nitro America videos are never in the way of the story as much as they are moving along with the story and this is a perfect example.
From the pre-race prayer we hear to the run, to the celebration on the starting line, and ultimately to the relief and joy at the finish line, Mayhew gets is all. He also gets a neat shot of Horan walking through the darkness to offer a handshake to Hale and a congratulations on winning in the final round. This is the kind of stuff that we wish all drag race videos were made of. Another great piece of film from Nitro America!
