DOH! Here’s What Happens When The Main Caps Do Not Get Torqued In Your Freshly Built Engine

DOH! Here’s What Happens When The Main Caps Do Not Get Torqued In Your Freshly Built Engine

So we have all been there. Whether it was that little mistake on the first problem of the high school math test that threw off the rest of your answers or perhaps that little mistake with too many beers that threw off your weekend, we have all screwed up and paid the price. In this video we see a small block Chevy engine on a run stand with a set of upswept headers on it. The engine is purring away, running with no valve covers as a couple of guys check out their handiwork. Unbeknownst to them, there is a disaster lurking right under their noses. Apparently someone failed to torque the main caps and as you will see, the result is that this new engine is utterly and totally effed.

It is one thing to blow an engine up in a car. It is another thing to blow an engine up on a dyno, but to blow one up on your garage floor as it is freewheeling? Yikes. Hey, we guess the silver lining here is that all the labor of swinging it into the car was not wasted only to have the thing spit the bit before the end of the driveway.

We have no idea where these guys are from but we do know that they speak the universal language of gearheads. If you are easily offended by some swear words, skip this video. We actually said the same words watching it as they said in the shop except we don’t have any investment in time or money into the project.

It was all going so well….

Where’s CHMG to tell us this is just the average life expectancy of a small block Chevy?
