Beating Yourself Up: Is The Kia Stinger Doomed Due To Competition From…Itself?

Beating Yourself Up: Is The Kia Stinger Doomed Due To Competition From…Itself?

(By Tom Lohnes) – The Kia Stinger and its hot GT variant are for sure significant cars of the 2010 decade. Kia, the company known for making downmarket cars lead a brand revitalization with the Stinger. How? They made a great looking, luxurious, fast, rear-wheel-drive based sport sedan that is a great deal. Both variants of the car are fun, the 255 horsepower 2.0T package, or the 365 horsepower GT, with either rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive. But the Stinger’s slightly younger brother, The Genisis G70 is causing Stinger sales to go into a downhill slope simply because the Genisis is a better all-around car. But, even if the Stings isn’t as fancy as the G70 it is still packing a lot of bang-for-your-buck and a lot more personality than the Genesis.

The Kia Stinger starts at $34,125 for the 2.0T GT-Line variant, which packs a turbocharged four-cylinder and 255 horsepower. The car can be had with All-Wheel-Drive for $2,200 extra. The next trim up is the GT, which adds 110 horsepower to the picture and starts at $39,500 so a pretty significant price jump. But the Stinger GT in RWD form can do 0-60 in 5.1 seconds compared to the 2.0T’s 6.6.

The Stinger GT also has a body kit, along with more expensive GT1 and GT2 variants, with the GT2 coming in at a base of $50,500. Kia has made a very strong car that suffers from consumer judgement based on the badge it wears. The Stinger sales slowdown has reported made the manufacturer consider its future. Kia might  not be bringing another generation of it to the states after the first-gen series is done with. The Genisis G70 will still be in the lineup riding on Stinger underpinnings.

In short, I think the Kia Stinger will be another one of those cars that we won’t understand how cool it really is until it’s been out of production for 20 years, like so many others people talk about. I feel the Stinger will be considered a collectible enthusiast’s car in the future and over time prices should go up. My advice? Before everyone finds out about the Stinger used GT models are in the low $30,000 range, so snatch yours up now.

I have owned many different vehicles, sometimes 5 at the same time, from an H2 to conv vette, etc, easiest vehicles have been Kias. No problems for years, great quality, and luxury. Amazing! I have always reccomended. Friends keep purchasing them as well.

A good friend of mine has one of these. It’s brilliant in every measurable way. And it’s fun to drive and it’s legit fast. It’s not far from the sort of car we claim we would run down to a dealership and buy if one was available. Except not enough people are

    Meh, MK5 with a 6spd manual.
    hardtop convert.
    34k before the dealership dance.
lighter, better DRIVERS sports car. Might not have the hp. but.
You’ll be able to get parts for the MK5 and the Kia. not so much.
The Kia is a lease it or buy it and in 3-4 years send it down the road.
TheMK5 is the poor mans vette. Plenty of parts support, and you’ll most likely keep it a lot longer than even YOU thought as they are fun to drive even at legal speeds.

Is a mk5 a jetta? Those are not reliable.. does it have like a 40k like warranty? That’s what you call a LEASE IT AND RETURN IT. The stinger has 100k lifetime warranty. So your comment makes no sense

Its 50 large loaded. Too much. 40 I could see. I think I would go for the G70 first and I may.

The G70 is an ultra bland looking sedan with a tiny trunk. the Stinger is. A beautiful car with an enormous hatchback cargo area. I love my 2019 GT2 and only paid $38500 new.

Where did you get a gt2 for 38k new? Cheapest I find is around 47 with 5k discount

  6. Dick Fitzwell

It’s a KIA. Kias are JUNK. You can’t sell garbage for years then expect people to forget. 50 grand for a Kia, get the hell out of here

  7. Angel

I have the gt2 stinger, dealership, mainly service made paying 50 grand a joke. Not worth it!

Service will have to touch your car.
Folsom lake kia in folsom cali
Bad experience, i feel stupid buying sportscar from kia
    Cant wait to finish lease!!!!

    1. Mike

Can you explain a bit? What dealership only service are you talking about? The Kia comes with lifetime oil changes for free

    2. Jason Osantowski

If people can not speak in full sentences they should not be able to comment. It would be I feel stupid buying “a” sportscar from Kia. And what does it mean service will have to touch your car?
