Blog Fight: The Wagon Battle Escalates With This Sweet Ford Country Squire – FE Power, Patina, A Winner For Sure

Look, this station wagon fight that McTaggart started with me (as history will show, NOT the other way around) may rage on for days. This could turn into the station wagon equivalent of WWI with each of us trenching in. If that’s the case, consider this my first reel of barbed wire being rolled out. I know we were on a whole Cadillac wagon kick for a while there but the last thing that Bryan poster was such a fat, bloated, ugly, embarrassment I needed to get this thing turned in a BangShifty direction….enter this hunk of sweetness. The wagon you see here is a 1971 Ford Country Squire and the seller claims that it is one of just 289 ever made that year. It has some wear and tear, a little rust, and the simulated woodgrain sides are looking a little weather beaten but this is BangShifty perfection with potential for days. The only question regards which way you’d take it. For us there’s only one direction.

If we had our way, we’d plunk a dual quad 428 Cobra Jet engine under the hood of this car and we’d also swap a four speed into it. Hey, it is already set up for an FE and we have seen LTDs of this era with gear mashers before so it isn’t like the job is impossible. Even the way it sits, the car would be pretty fun. The owners says that he has had it for about a year and primarily used it for cruises and stuff of that nature. The interior is in great shape and this has the weirdo Ford rear seats in the “way back” that actually face each other like it is a troop carrier or something. Other than fixing the rust on the rear quarter panel we wouldn’t touch the exterior of this thing!

Here’s the text of the ad –

For Sale I have a 1971 Ford Country Squire that is 1 of 289 produced With only 76,000 Miles. It has a Big Block 390 FE with an Automatic C-6 Trans.  I have owned the car for almost a year now and used it as a show car, It gets lots of looks. It has some small rust on the quarters and inner door on the rear drivers side. I re-painted the hood in April but have never buffed it. The floor pans are solid as it looks like that car was undercoated from the factory, I have undercoated as well when I got it. The wood grain is starting to fade and peal in spots but there is a company that reproduces it. It has the Magic Tailgate, What this means is that the Tailgate opens outward and it also folds down. The window on the tailgate has some trouble going up and down I think the tracks just need to be cleaned. The motor runs great once it warms up, The choke on the carb needs to be set as I rebuilt the carb and just have never set the choke so it takes a while to warm up. There is an exhaust leak coming from on of the manifold I have never bothered with it just never had time. The A/C works great and blows cold. The heat however does not seem to get very warm. The interior is MINT no rips or tears the back 3 seats are still in the factory plastic, Head liner is in nice shape however it is missing a dome light cover. The gas gauge does not work not sure why. The spare tire and tools are all still there along with road side markers. I have a set of American Racing 5 lugs on there but I do still have the original rims and hub caps.

My dad had a 1976 Ford Country Squire with a 460, 10 passenger seating, hideaway headlights and wood grain sides. Too bad it rotted out a long time ago.

I have never disliked a single Country Squire wagon that has graced this website. This thing is fantastic, and a CobraJet motor under the hood would make it an awesome sleeper.

    Oh I like this one.

Back in ’73 Grandpa loaned Dad his Chrysler wagon for our road trip from CA-AR on the way home we rambled through Flagstaff , Vegas , Tahoe , King Canyon. Looking back it was our best road trip ever and had to be an entire month.

That big white wagon didn’t have the rear facing way back , even if it did it was covered with travel stuff , but my sister and I had our own time zones compared to the family VW bug we normally road in.

My guess is it was a ’67-70 because Grandpa traded it in ’74 for a Demon.

My wife would kill me ,but for some reason…………..

My mom had a 71 country squire – same color – minus the wood grain. 351W. Loved that car. I have recently found pictures of it…

    Yeah that’s defiantly the Winner.

That takes me back when I was a kid the car that got me into cars was a
72 Galaxie 500 4dr sedan, Dark Green with Green interior, 400M auto

Hard to tell for sure but that really doesn’t look like an FE. Looks a whole lot like the 400M that probably came new in it.

The NY Pontiac wagon and this one are drivers. The two Caddys were too “precious.” As it stands now, I’m liking this FoMoCo better than the PMD entry.
