(Words and photos by Charles Wickam) – 2015 was a exciting year for me, I was able to photograph a number of items that were on my bucket list. Stuff like land speed racing, truck and tractor pulls, a dirt late model traveling series, and more. Going to these events also allowed me to make new friends as well, beginning of the year I was in Dallas covering the Dallas autorama for Championship Auto Shows (the people who put on autorama) next month I’m photographing one of my favorite automotive events, drifting, the next weekend I’m photographing a different kind of drifting that took place on one of the local dirt tracks watching the SUPR late model series and those unbelievable high horse power machines.
April was a busy month for me as 3 of the 4 weekends of that month had some the biggest events I cover for the year, first off was the Houston Sport Truck shootout at Royal Purple Raceway that just so happened to have Larry Larson and his infamous S-10 doing exhibition passes throughout the day. I thought I was going to be able to stash my camera bag in Larrys trailer for the day but once he saw I had the ability to swing a wrench, he put me to work crewing on the truck. I also attended the infamous Lonestar Roundup in Austin TX, a three day event with 1,500 vintage hot rods from all over the country converge in whats become the largest gathering of 50s and 60s styled hot rods anywhere. Then throw in the NHRAs Spring Nationals in Baytown TX and you have your self one extremely worn out photographer by the end of the month!
May was another wild month, more first for me, covering truck and tractor pulls as well as land speed racing where I got to see my friend Jack go 200+ mph in a standing half mile event, then drive the car to the local car cruise in Kemah that same night. Getting a photo of the Mach 5 AND Batmobile in the same pic is one of the favorite pics I’ve taken ever.
I must of done something good because June was a fun month. I got a phone call from Larry Larson asking if I would crew on his truck in Dallas for event he was attending with the S-10, arriving early he put me right to work under the truck, with the crowds around the truck i was afraid my beverage was going to get kicked over so i put it in a safe place (don’t tell Larry! lol)….
But the end of June …wow. In a day that still haunts me, traveling to work early in the morning I had a piece of road debris come thru my windshield that if it was 12 inches to the left i wouldn’t be here typing this. It honestly put a fear of driving into me and the only driving I did was to work and home for a number of weeks. Here’s the carnage:
In July Mr Lohnes asked me if I would be interested in going to Joilet to cover the NMCA/NMRA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing, I said yes not knowing what I was getting myself into. HA! If you want to see 3 solid days of racing sun up to well past sundown with every kind of door slammer car and truck imaginable you need to attend this event.
…and with another trip to Dallas to hang out with my friends of the web series Roadkill I was able to see a number of Roadkills projects like General Mayhem
I rounded out the year covering the Lonestar 600 as well the Houston Autorama which are another two of my favorite events held in the Houston area –
Its hard to say what 2016 holds in store for me, I know theres talks of a big no-prep race at a drag strip in Texas and ALOT of big names in the drag racing game have already thrown their hat into the ring saying that they will be there but what’s for sure is that if I’m there with a camera, you’ll see it here on Bangshift!
Fail.No mention of that rockstar Beagle of yours named Toby and you taking him for a walk and Toby sniffing out a dead body.Keep that up and Tobys coming to Kansas and living with a family that loves him. LOL.
