Auto Trader Classics Find: A Turbocharged Straight-8 Buick Powered Belly Tank

Auto Trader Classics Find: A Turbocharged Straight-8 Buick Powered Belly Tank

If it is possible to create a cooler LSR racer than this, please give us the formula. A turbocharged Buick straight-eight motor shoehorned into a belly tank from an old Air Force F86 makes for a level of awesome few vehicles can ever achieve. The car has held records at Bonneville and prior to the turbo was good for 175mph. With the huffer 200mph seems like a possibility.

The car has awesome history as well. It uses several parts, like the front axle from a car that was run at Bonneville in the 1940s. 2001 was the last time the car really ran in anger. It was reassembled to be taken to the Grand National Roadster Show in 2008 and the motor was fired again in late 2009. It runs, but even by the seller’s admission the car is not capable of racing without being gone through and updated in a few safety areas.

Due to the oldie Buick mill the car does qualify for the XO “vintage engine” category and would run in the blown gas lakester category if being put into competition in current form with the turbo. There have been other cars running the straight-eight motor in different categories with blowers and turbos. They have had success and there is no reason to think that this bullet shaped anachronism couldn’t claim a spot in the record books again as well.

With a unique mix of history, cool power, and proven performances, this car is an awesome piece for anyone who has already been hit with the LSR big and wants to step on their program hard!
