Question of the Day: What’s the Coolest Wheel Ever?

Question of the Day: What’s the Coolest Wheel Ever?

Wheels are such a huge part of the look and performance package of any car. There are thousands of different designs out there, from the classic steel “rally” wheels that adorned so many cars to far more racy looking stuff like Mini-lites, magnesium Halibrands, and on and on. Outside of the commercially available stuff there have been some incredible one off wheels made for all out show cars built by the likes of Foose, Coddington, and others. On the other end of the spectrum, there are some heinous designs that have popped up through the years with stuff like teddy bears, spinning things, and wheels that lit up as they spun.

Today we’re asking you what the coolest wheel of all time is. Nothing is out of bounds, nothing is off limits. From the billion unit production run of the classic Cragar S/S, to a one off piece of mechanical jewelry made for a million dollar show car we want to know what’s what. Is it a factory made piece or a billet beauty? You tell us.

What’s the coolest wheel ever?

They don’t call them Keystone Classics for nothing! Still have a 15×7 set in the garage waiting for a car.

They don’t call them Keystone Classics for Nothing! Still have a set of 15×7’s in the garage waiting for the right car to come along.

The Chevy steel rally wheel. So many variations. Never goes out of style.Another one is the Centerline Autodrag.

The first set of Fenton mags I saw in 64 did it for me and I bought a set but when I saw Cragar SS’s I had to get them on my Chevelle. Every muscle car looks goods with those wheels.

The original Hurst wheels are still gorgeous. The newer versions just dont have the same classy look. I wish you could get 15×8 exactly like the originals.

I can’t believe no one suggested this yet, but the wheel hall of fame has to include the Torque Thrust D.

Aluminum slots….lots of varieties were made by lots of companies. They still look good. And the best part is the design doesn’t work with larger sizes, so you have to use proper size tires with them.

They got the nickname “MAGS” for a reason!!
I LOVE the Big Window Halibrands, but unfortunately there are too many guys with deep pockets out there paying outrageous $$ for them, so alas, I may never be able to afford a set of the real ones:( If the prices continue to climb, it won’t be long before it will be economically viable to buy a set CNC’d out of mag billet for less than an original set………

Maybe if I hold onto my Centerlines long enough, they will command the kind of $$ the Hali’s do?? :):) as if

Rocket: Yes, the wheel you mentioned is on my list of “Plan B” wheels:):)….as is the Strike wheel for when I get around to building a 61-66 Ford Pickup!

      Cheers

American Five Spokes! The most copied and never surpassed wheel design of them all! The Hot Rodder’s Ten Commandments say:”All wheels shall have no more than five spokes.” ’nuff said

  9. Larry

Waay Too Fast Fred is RIGHT. No question about it. Second place Crager SS. These wheel makers that say they make a wheel based upon blah blah blah don’t cut it. No question about it.

For me, it has gotta be the Magnum 500. Hell, they had ’em on Mopars, Fords and AMC’s and GM even copied them for the Chevelle and Camaro. Great looking wheels!

I’ve always loved Cromodoras – especially the 5-slot type often found on old BMW 2002s or the dished 5-stars on a Ferrari Daytona. Mmmm, magnesium!

cragar ss . were the very first set of custom wheels I had on a 66 Chevelle.–Still love them today 40 years later
