British Company Claims to Have Electric Supercharger Ready for Market

Controlled Power Technologies, a British engineering outfit claims to have developed and tested an electric supercharger which is now ready for production. The company is making heady claims as to the benefits of their product. Strangely, all the touted benefits seem to be the same type of stuff that you get out of a turbocharger.

One of the advantages the company touts over a turbo is the fact that lag time is virtually non-existant. The electric blower can accelerate from zero rpm to 70,000 rpm in lass than one second. CPT also claims that this blower can be used to reduce the lag of a standard turbo.

The idea is pretty neat, but we’ll be honest—we’re skeptical (as it seems we always are). In the press release here at GreenCarReports.com (a site we don’t frequent, btw), it is mentioned that installing one of these babies on a little 2.0 liter gas engine can boost power by up to 33 hp. That’s weak sauce when compared to what a well matched and tuned turbocharger can do. There’s no fear of your turbo not cycling on properly like an A/C pump either.

Is this for real or just a publicity grab?
