Rough Start: Big Dually! Does This 1993 Chevy C3500 Scratch That Big-Truck Itch?

Rough Start: Big Dually! Does This 1993 Chevy C3500 Scratch That Big-Truck Itch?

There is something audacious about a big dually pickup truck, dropped to the earth, rocking a big-block soundtrack. The wide hips and dual wheels give an almost old-school hot rod look to what otherwise might as well be the truck DOT crews use to spread mulch out around the intersections of the nicer sections of town with. In a strange way, it’s almost the last vestige of the old musclecar era: a large, body-on-frame vehicle with a big-bore V8 and room for plenty of people inside. That would explain why a lot of people shifted to trucks over the years…it is kind of hard to take the Citation seriously when you were just driving a Chevelle not to long ago, I’d assume.

We know that the 1990s-era 454s weren’t the same as their fire-breathing brethren of old, we get that. They were built as torque engines and didn’t have quite the oomph that most people who are familiar with the old school expect. But it’s a big-block Chevrolet…as long as you aren’t trying to keep the California Smog Police happy, there are options for you. Bundled up into a 1993 Chevy dually, you have damn near endless options for how you want to trick out this big red beast. We’re digging the wheels already on it and are happy to see that the tires are fresh.

The truck is up for $4,500 and all we can see for immediate work is to resolve some minor body dings, maybe a driver’s door. Even if you just need a shop truck…you could do worse.

My buddy is HS had a same gen c3500 dually with the 454. He said it got 7mpg however he drove it, towing a boat, highway or just around town, 7mpg. He also had the exhaust off from manifold back for a few days waiting for parts….you could hear it coming from 1/2 mile away. Sounded like an Apache helicopter rolling in.
