This Chrysler Town and Country Wagon Is Beautiful, But Is Hiding A Dark Secret!

This Chrysler Town and Country Wagon Is Beautiful, But Is Hiding A Dark Secret!

We love our large wagons around here, and this 1977 Chrysler Town and Country would fit the bill nicely. Black, with dark red interior and more room that some of the hotels that I’ve stayed at during my travels. It’s not everyday that you see these big tanks in any condition, let alone solid and drivable. But there is more than meets the eye here…the wagon is the combination of a New Yorker and a Town and Country wagon, so you get the ultra-luxury fluffy pillow seats. Knock 1970s Chrysler for nearly whatever you want, but the big C-bodies were solidly built tanks and Chrysler knew how to make a very comfortable bench to sit on.

It’s not a big block, period: Per the ad, “For economical and reliability reasons I had a professional installed GM 350 ci TBFI with a 700 R4 overdrive transmission.” We know that the 440 and 727 can be thirsty, but going straight for a late-model 350 seems like a drastic measure.

  1. Chevy Hatin' Mad Geordie

    Economy reasons?

What sort of blubbering idiot swaps in a 350 hunka Chevy shit to replace a 440 big block?

That small block will burn twice the amount of fuel trying to keep this thing moving and will probably self-destruct after a couple of miles anyway.

    But who gives a shit…….

Chevy Hatin’ Mad Geordie, is, as usual, spot on. Except for the “who gives a shit” part. I’d buy it, sell the boat anchor of a drive train to some clinging chevy guy, and put a real engine and trans back in it. With a GVO….

  3. ANGRYJOE

This is heartbreaking…on the outside is a stunning example of 70’s land yacht and under the surface is a turd of a power plant. If this were a money is no object scenario I would install the proper 440 with EFIand then back it up with a GVO….Road trip! Pile in!

  4. Mopar or No Car

The concept was good and I love the appearance, but… Once you hack a car, nobody is going to help you recoup the money you spent doing it. Unrestored? That means original with all the good and bad (rubber, wiring, etc.). He can knock off a few Gs or he can eat it.

With modern fuel injection and overdrive transmissions there’s no reason to make a half breed like this.

For what he spend on the engine, trans and “professional”, that could have bought a lot of gas for the thirsty 440/727.

If there is room for a 440, a Hemi will fit. American Powertrain 6speed and this thing would be GO

If he really HAD to fit a later model efi small small and OD trans, why not a 5.9 Magnum out of a Ram?
